This year, the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences (officially the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences) was awarded to Paul R Milgrom and Robert R Wilson for “improvements to auction theory and inventions of new auction formats”. Their work tells us how governments and companies can better allocate scarce resources – a fundamental question that has plagued economists for ages!
