About the Event
For the fifth instalment of our 'Indian Economy Webinar Series,' we are glad to host Prof. Jayati Ghosh of Jawaharlal Nehru University to talk about the various interactions between the phenomena of pandemics, lockdowns, and social protection.
The pandemic has exposed the humanitarian catastrophe that can result from the lack of social protection. But can India afford social protection for all? Can we afford not to have it, both socially and economically? What would it mean, how could it be done, can the government afford it?
Professor Jayati Ghosh is the Chairperson of the Center for Economic Studies and Planning at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and has previously held appointments at the University of Cambridge and the erstwhile Planning Commission. Her writings include books like "Crisis as Conquest: Learning from East Asia" and "Never Done and Poorly Paid: Women’s work in globalising India", besides several publications in peer-reviewed journals. Her core areas of study are international economics, employment patterns in developing countries, macroeconomic policy, and issues related to gender and development.
